Heritage Room Manager
As a volunteer in the Heritage Room at LAC, I have a deep passion for the history of the college. Unfortunately, so much of the past had previously been lost due to not having a permanent place to store everything. However, the Heritage Room is now housed in what is known affectionately as ‘The Dungeon’; a room previously used for a student common room and a radio station, amongst other things.
In the 12 years I have been involved in the Heritage Room I have tried to contact as many ex-students and staff as possible. In the 102 years of the college’s existence, over 5,500 students have been through and are now entered onto a Heritage database. Out of these I have managed to obtain between 3,500 to 4,000 current addresses. I love trying to find an address of an ex-student and get a thrill when my persistence pays off!
In 2008, at Easter, we celebrated 100 years of the school’s existence, and invited as many ex-students and staff as we had contact details for to attend this event. Over 1,000 responded and attended. Some of them had not seen each other since they left school, and it was worth all the hours of work just to see the reaction of long-lost friends meeting again.
In 2010 another much smaller reunion, covering certain year groups, was held, again at Easter. We had 60 people register for this, and it was felt in some ways it was as good as the BIG reunion; even better in one way in that it was easier to get to talk with each other! It is hoped these year-specific reunions will continue every two years.
Amongst the things I enjoy are watching my two youngest grandsons play their sports (in-line hockey, football and basketball), my church activities, reading, and being with my family and friends. |
