Careers/Star/GatewayGateway
Gateway is available to all senior school students above the age of 16. The programme opens a pathway from school to the world of work. It’s a great opportunity to blend school study with workplace learning experience. Learning is assessed in the workplace, counting towards national qualifications.
Gateway helps build skills for employment where students work in real places on real tasks. Students have opportunities to try out potential careers and build links to Industry Training Organisations, Modern Apprenticeships and workplaces. Students at LAC have been placed in the Air Force, Police Force, building, plumbing, aerial installation, business administration, childcare, tourism, secretarial, equine industry, and fitness gyms. The opportunities are endless. Gateway provides our students with a clear view of career options available. STAR
The purpose of the Student Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR) is to support schools in facilitating a smooth transaction from secondary school to further education or employment. STAR is available to secondary students for vocational subjects. This resource is enacted through the development of programmes designed for STAR through various registered Providers.
STAR tertiary courses help meet students' needs and motivate them to achieve and explore career pathways. For example, students at LAC have enrolled in a National Certificate of Aviation and received flight instruction from Flight Manawatu towards their Solo Pilot's Licence. Other students have pursued courses in hairdressing and beauty, nursing, automotive engineering, construction, hospitality, scuba diving, defensive driving, and basic and advanced first aid. Funding has also been used for a student to start her degree at Massey University while in Yr 13. Two Agriculture classes are currently funded through STAR, and students are completing a National Certificate In Agriculture (Level 2) under their Provider, Land Based Training. While in the classroom and out in the field, students receive Level 2 and 3 NCEA credits in a variety of practical tasks such as tractor and ATV handling and safety, fencing, docking sheep, pasture management, milking etc. They also attend two inter-school field days where they are challenged to put their skills into practical situations, competing against other students. STAR courses provide students with exciting opportunities to experience differing pathways and make informed decisions about their schooling and future work or study. |
