LAC’s Science Department is a vibrant, inspiring and sometimes exhilarating place. Almost every day there is something happening that is sure to help you remember and understand scientific concepts for a lifetime. Whether it is a flame tube in physics demonstrating standing wave, a dry ice bomb to show sublimation and pressure, or making ‘elephant’s toothpaste’ in chemistry, science always seems to leave a lasting impression.

Science is an important part of learning for students, as it is an essential part of so many careers and future opportunities. For this reason, we try to make science accessible to any student who is willing to put a solid effort into learning. In the senior levels, science is by no means an easy subject, but it is rewarding in the way that any challenge is when you rise to meet it.

One of the great things about science at LAC is the perspective in which it is taught. The Creation versus Evolution debate is not one that will go away any time soon. Both viewpoints of the argument are presented at LAC but they are taught as what they are – theories and, ultimately, beliefs. In this department we are open about what our beliefs are, but we are also scientists who are familiar with the evidence for and against the theory of evolution. So you won’t miss out on any curriculum learning, in fact you will learn about both sides of this rather controversial topic.

Another important part of science that we consider to be important is the practical, hands-on activities and demonstrations. These are what transform science from the mundane to the memorable, and can mean the difference between success and failure for students. We always strive to present concepts in a way that can be seen, heard or touched, and hopefully understood. We also try to contextualise the ideas and problems to make them more accessible and highlight their importance.

As Robert Hermann once said, “Everywhere you look in science, the harder it becomes to understand the universe without God”. LAC is the place to study if you are wanting a quality science education that has balance and enthusiasm.
