It’s open to all NZ secondary school students. This is aimed at giving secondary school shooters the chance to compete nationally for both individual and team glory and recognition.

Round 4 has just finished and the overall results are in, with Nikkita Cheesman from Longburn Adventist College in second place after putting in a great final round 199.05 to jump from fourth to second place. Shelley Cheesmam was placed 43rd in individuals.  Nikkita is first in C grade and Shelley is 18th in D grade. They have progressed to the finals of the interschool competition, where they will face the Monrad Stelenas team on Thursday, 20 September. Well done!

Bowls & BBQ is Back in Term 4!

It’s time for some fun and a bit of exercise at the Northern Bowling Club again in Term 4 in the secondary school lawn bowls competition every Wednesday, starting 24th October. Lawn bowls is free of charge to all students, who are also treated to a BBQ after their matches.  Bowls has become very popular, especially with dorm students who are always eager to book their seat on the school bus.

Besides the BBQ and social benefits, bowls also have many physical benefits.

Health professionals recommend playing bowls, because:

  • It improves fitness
  • It improves coordination and skill development
  • It increases confidence and self-esteem
  • It enhances mental wellbeing
  • It provides community connectedness and support

Email your name to Mr Ferreira to book your place on one of the many LAC participating teams:  sport@lac.school.nz

See you on the 24th of October!

Touch Rugby, Term 4

In term 1, LAC entered a mixed senior team into the secondary school’s touch competition held at QEC on Tuesday evenings. Students will once again have the opportunity to enter for the competition in term 4 and are encouraged to enter their names on the sports notice board. The team will be under the management of Mr Paul and Mr Amoah.

Cricket, Term 4

Dave Meiring, director of the Manawatu Cricket Association, has offered secondary schools the opportunity to learn and enjoy some intra-school cricket in a variety of game formats. The rationale behind this is to make the game as accessible as possible to all – so lunchtime cricket is a good idea. Some students and house captains may even enjoy inter-house challenges.

There are a number of ways in which the games could be structured, for example :

  • Traditional 20/20
  • Indoor
  • 6 A-Side
  • Backyard (Schoolyard)
  • Beach

Cricket no longer needs to be played in whites, on a pitch with 11 players. It has become necessary to cater to the skill level of a variety of students and to start thinking outside the square and adapt the game to the students’ way of thinking, as many of other codes have done. The MCA is more than happy to come in and run these competitions to ensure that the games run smoothly.

If any students would like to give cricket a go in term 4, please contact Mr Ferreira.  Two eager staff have volunteered to manage the players, namely Mr Cornford and Mr Llena.

Students Nominated for Manawatu Sports Awards(Student Volunteers)

The Stephen Parsons House of Travel Secondary School Sports Awards is an event dedicated to recognising our regions highest performing secondary school athletes, volunteers, and officials.

Last year there were more than 180 students nominated with over 100 athletes recognised as New Zealand representatives at the awards ceremony.  Student volunteers are also honoured at the function which is to be held at the Awapuni Function Centre on 31 October and we have nominated two students, namely TJ Foaga and Stella Murchie.

TJ has been nominated for his role as coach of the Intermediate basketball team. A Year 9 basketball player himself, he stepped up as a role model for the young players and even ensured they had a Friday gym booking for training.  Stella has proven she is a very good organiser and manager as she took control of our scorebench every Friday at basketball.  Together with Naomi Jaboon, she ensured we always had student volunteers and that they were trained in benching.  Well done to both and thank you!
