LAC Sports 2021 Term 1

MARK DONALDSON RIPPA RUGBY TOURNAMENT

LAC participated for the first time in the annual Mark Donaldson Rippa Rugby Tournament. This is a yearly tournament held for students up to Year 8. Our team of 10 had a great day playing and learning the sport as we participated, and are looking forward to playing more Rippa in the future. Special Recognition to our two highest tryscorers of the day: Naphtali Sayles and Juan Saunders.

SUMMER RUGBY FESTIVAL

Two weeks ago, Rugby Manawatu partnered with NZ Rugby to host the first ever Summer Tournament Week Rugby Festival. The festival served a part of the lead up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup, taking place here in New Zealand later this year. The festival included Sevens
Rugby, and Rippa for junior and senior boys and girls. LAC was pleased to participate with a senior girls and senior boys team in both the Sevens and Rippa events. Both teams played well and showed great resilience in the midst of a long day of rugby. The day’s hard work was paid off with the girls team gaining a victory against Palmy Girls. Our students also had the privilege of
meeting Black Ferns Selica Winiata and Carys Dallinger. Special notice to Alevya Skerrett and Charm N, who were recognised by Rugby Manawatu for their outstanding performances. Great work LAC!

FUTSAL

The Futsal team were fortunate to have Antony Riley of Central Football take a training session recently. Antony is an International (FIFA) Futsal Referee, so brings so much knowledge with him to these sessions.
Since the session, it is clear that the team has lifted their work rate and intensity – well done.
In recent competition matches, the LAC Futsal Team has secured wins including a very tight 3-1 win over St Peters. We have had 5 games for 4 wins. There is one round to go this Friday (16 April), which will complete the Term 1 season.

Due to some prompting by the Futsal team, and the determination of William B to follow through on behalf of the team, we now have regulation Futsal goals for practice. This is making a great difference for our goalkeepers and also for our outfield players when developing scoring strategies. Thanks to the LAC PE learning area and the Sports Department for the funding of the goals.

Badminton

Big congratulations to the Year 7 and 8 Badminton teams this season! LAC Smashers, Year 8s, grabbed their winner trophies placing first in Kea Division. LAC Shuttlers, Year 7s, placed 3rd in Kakapo Division. Well done teams and thank you for all the teacher support with these teams.
