Girls’ Hockey 2018

Congratulations to our girls’ hockey team who finished the season off with a convincing 5-1 win to take out third place in our division. We played 15 games this season and came away with 12 wins and scored 88 goals. It has been a rewarding team to coach; some existing players stepped up to new levels, some new players have provided exciting opportunities for the future, and the team as a whole exceeded my expectations. Thank you to the girls for the hard work and dedication they have put in this season. I’m really blessed to have a great bunch of girls with no dramas! Thank you to the parents and supporters for all the pickups, drop-offs and sideline support and a big thank you to our team manager Rachel Paki for her time, effort, patience and love.

Special thank you to Abbey Smith who has led by example and done an excellent job of captaining our team this year. Along with Abbey, we say farewell to our two other Year 13 girls – Stella Murchie and Kiata Mori. We will miss the three of you very much and I have loved having you girls in the team.

I have two special mentions, the first is Piper Fuller for stepping up to the challenge of playing goalie this season. It’s always hard to find someone to play goalie but Piper was keen from the start and has great athletic ability. Piper has had a great first season and we look forward to her growing further in skill and confidence next season. The second is Macy Paki who scored a whopping 70 goals over the 15 games. An outstanding effort by a talented young player! As the centre-forward, goal scoring is Macy’s job and as you can tell, she takes this job very seriously!

Hockey runs from Term 2 to halfway through Term 3 and we’ll be looking for a few new players next season. So if you’re keen to join a dedicated, fun team and play a real sport, come see me.

Avondale College’s Practicum Teachers

Over the last couple of weeks, you may have noticed some extra faces wandering the school campus. LAC has been kind enough to host six students teachers from Avondale College, Australia to come over and complete a three-week practicum.

I am currently in the third year of my primary teaching course. I decided to apply to come to New Zealand after a bit of encouragement and hearing the stories of the experiences of my friends who had previously done their placement here, and I am so happy I did. While I’ve been at LAC I have been working with the year 7/8s and have thoroughly enjoyed every part of it.

I am studying Business and PE teaching at Avondale. I decided to go to LAC for my third prac partly because of previous LAC prac teachers like Mr Metz who highly recommended it. I am fortunate enough to have the Year 9’s and 10’s who challenge me to be a better teacher each day.

Jym Bocala

I am currently studying Maths and English teaching at Avondale College. LAC is my first prac and I have been blessed to get Mrs Matthews as my mentor teacher. I have been teaching some Year 9,10 and 11 Maths classes. My favourite part of this whole experience so far has been getting to stay in dorms and spending time with the awesome boarders.

I am at the end of my third year at Avondale College. I am studying a Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor in Teaching and specialising in technology and applied studies. I have chosen to come to Longburn to have an experience in boarding school. This opportunity has allowed me to grow in my relational skills and improve my teaching.

Experience plus reflection equals growth. This motto has been the foundation of our team’s’ mindset when it comes to the profession of teaching. I am currently in my third year of teaching. My major is PE with a minor of Modern History. At first, I had not planned to come to LAC. Although my visit wasn’t intentional, I can honestly say that this was part of God’s plan for me. This school has taught me so much about teaching, being a mentor and reassured my purpose as a teacher.

Ignatius Ah-You

I’m studying secondary teaching, majoring in Religious Studies and minoring in Ancient History. I feel extremely privileged to be able to complete a teaching practicum at the great school, Longburn Adventist College. The staff and students have been amazingly welcoming to me and the other student teachers, which makes all the difference. I know thus far that God has been guiding my path and I know that God guided me to LAC. It has been an awesome experience not only professionally but spiritually. We want to thank the LAC staff and students for their kindness and welcoming nature. It truly has been an awesome opportunity.

Cinematography – Pasifika Fusion 2018

First Place Winner

  • Student: Jotham Tesese
  • Year: 13
  • Ethnicity: Samoan
  • Title: Being Me

In the short film ‘Being Me’, Bella Savai’i is an ordinary high school student who has low self-esteem and is constantly comparing herself to Moana Tupou. Moana Tupou is a popular student who has it all, the looks, the grades and the skills. However, everything changes when Moana receives her first ‘Not Achieved’ grade.

This short film emphasises the importance of being yourself and not comparing yourself to others. In our Pacific Island Community, it is important for the young people to have self-worth in a society where perfection is the focus (particularly in social media). Being able to have resilience is also important to be able to ‘bounce back’ from adversities we face every day. When building self-worth and resilience, sometimes we need to have a wake-up call.

  • Student: Tywana Wong
  • Year: 11
  • Ethnicity: Papua New Guinea
  • Title: A New Day

The short film is based on cultural preferences that are adapted into modern times that is yet considered overlooked in societies. A New Day showcases self-worth by appreciating one’s culture as well as performance and also shows resilience through accepting criticism and recovering from negativity. The film shows that every day is a new day to start right and become successful.

  • Student: Jayden Shilton-Hart (with Lochlan Packman)
  • Year: 13
  • Ethnicity: Polish / Fijian
  • Title: Kaivalagi

I have never considered myself to be Pasifika. Growing up, I have never really acknowledged my Fijian roots. I was encouraged by my teacher to share my story and want other people who may look European, but have Pasifika blood in them to be proud of who they are and where they come from.
